A trip covers everyone traveling together: up to four people share the one price, on the one plan, chatting with the one travel companion. (A fifth traveler and beyond is a small add-on, $10 each, so a bigger family trip is still one trip.)
Your travel companion is there through the whole trip. You won't see a countdown or a running total, and in normal use you won't ever bump into a limit. There's a quiet daily limit behind the scenes, so an unusual runaway conversation doesn't cost more than the trip did, and if a very unusual day ever reaches it, your travel companion simply says it'll be back in the morning. For nearly everyone, that never comes up.
