A fair look at a general chat and a planner built for one trip, with what each costs. Prices as of October 2026.
ChatGPT is a capable general assistant, and it can help you plan a trip. Fingerpost is built for one job: a day-by-day plan for your trip that everyone traveling can open, change and chat about while you are away. If you want quick ideas and are happy to do the organizing yourself, a chat may be all you need. If you want one plan that your whole group shares and that you can ask about on the road, that is what Fingerpost is for.
Either one can make mistakes, so check hours and tickets before you rely on them. Want to see the difference first? See a sample day for your destination.
It is flexible. You can ask it anything, in any order, about any place, and you do not have to answer a set of questions first. That makes it a good tool for early brainstorming: where to go in spring, how two cities compare, what to pack.
It can remember. As of October 11, 2026, OpenAI's Help Center says ChatGPT has saved memories (details you ask it to keep) and a setting that lets it use relevant information from your past chats. Both are managed under Personalization, then Memory. If you already talk to ChatGPT about your tastes, it may carry some of that into a new trip.
It can be free or cheap. It has a Free plan and paid plans (prices below). If you already pay for it, planning a trip there costs you nothing extra.
It also lets you bring other people in. As of October 11, 2026, OpenAI says group chats are available on its Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans, so you can invite friends into the same conversation.
A trip is not one question. It is a long list of decisions that have to stay consistent: where you sleep, what is booked, what is left open, and who is coming. A chat is a conversation, so the plan lives inside it, and you scroll to find what you decided last week.
Fingerpost starts with an interview instead of a prompt. You tell us where you are going, how many days, who is coming, and what you love or would rather skip. It takes about 10 minutes, and you can stop and come back. Then you get a full day-by-day plan with sources, with free time left open on purpose and a couple of backup ideas for each day. That structure is the reason it exists: you do not have to know what to ask.
The plan is also easier to fix. When your first plan arrives, you and anyone planning with you rate the stops you would keep or change, and June, the travel companion, sends a revised plan. You can also edit the plan yourself as often as you like.
Sharing works differently too. A Fingerpost share link gives everyone on the trip their own sign-in to the same plan, and people at home can follow along. A ChatGPT shared link, by contrast, is a snapshot: OpenAI's Help Center says messages added to the original chat afterward are not added to a link you already shared (checked October 11, 2026). A snapshot is fine for showing someone an idea. It is a poor fit for a plan that changes.
On the trip, Companion lets you chat with June, who already has your plan, so nobody has to re-explain the trip in a new chat. If a change is worth making, she shows it to you first, and nothing updates itself behind your back. Like any AI assistant she can make mistakes, and she is not a booking system.

| What you need | ChatGPT (as of Oct 11, 2026) | Fingerpost | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where you start | A blank chat. You decide what to ask. | A setup interview of about 10 minutes. | An interview asks about things you might not think to mention, like who is coming and what to skip. |
| Remembering you | Saved memories and optional use of past chats, set under Personalization. | The plan holds your trip's details, and June already has them. | Both avoid repeating yourself. A trip's details sit in one place instead of across old chats. |
| Sharing | Shared links are a snapshot of a chat. Group chats are on Free, Go, Plus and Pro. | One share link; everyone gets their own sign-in to the same plan. | When the plan changes, the people traveling see the new version. |
| Changing the plan | Ask in the chat at any time. | Rate the stops, get a revised plan, edit it yourself. | Rating shows what you would keep, so the revision starts from your reactions. |
| On the trip | Open a chat and ask. | With Companion, chat with June about your plan, day or night. | She already knows the plan, so the question can be short. |
| Keeping the plan | Chats and shared links. | Your plan as a PDF, and documents kept encrypted with the trip. | A PDF reads offline and prints for a bag. |
| Booking | Not compared here. | We do not sell flights, hotels or tickets, and take no commission. | The plan is not shaped by what pays us. |
They are priced differently. ChatGPT is a monthly subscription. OpenAI lists ChatGPT Plus at $20 a month, billed monthly, and also has a Free plan. Prices checked October 2026. It covers everything you ask it, not only trips.
Fingerpost is one price per trip, with no subscription and nothing to cancel. The price depends on trip length and on whether you want the plan alone (Plan) or June along for the trip (Companion). Prices as of October 2026: for a 5 to 10 day trip, introductory prices are $14.50 for Plan and $34.50 for Companion, half the list price while we launch. Introductory prices may change. See the full table on the pricing page.
If you will only use a chat for an afternoon of ideas, the Free plan is hard to beat. If you want a shared, finished plan for a specific trip, the per-trip price buys that.
